Work work work

Today's a public holiday here in Mauritius (yes another one) - today's holiday is the Catholic feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The great thing about living in a cosmopolitan country is that us Mauritians get to celebrate each others holidays.
Today if you are Catholic you probably attend Mass and then its off to the beach or alternatively a get together with family in someones house if the weather is not co-operating.
The other notable thing about the feast of the Assumption, is that just like Easter you get to eat goodies - not chocolate in this case, but CAKE. it's a special cake too, always blue and white and usually decorated and adorned with a Virgin Mary motif.

List of Public Holidays in Mauritius
Unfortunately, like every other day we have to work, as that's one of the joys of having a business targeted at tourists - tourists themselves (and thank God) we attract them to Mauritius pay little regard to National holidays.
There are 15 public holidays a year in Mauritius, and as luck would have it they usually clash with the only free day in your diary that you need to travel to Port Louis for a meeting with the bank manager or your supplier etc.

It's the same for all small business owners, if you want to keep your customers happy, then holidays go on the back burner - a case in point, our washing machine was playing up and the service guy has just turned up to sort it out - good for him :)

So I'll love and leave you for now as I have to get back to work, but Maryline has just brewed up some coffee and it's accompanied with a slice of delicious gateau - so every cloud has a silver lining.

About me and my better half Maryline

A brief potted history:

Maryline was born and raised in Mauritius, and I have Polish/Irish roots, we met in the U.K where I was managing a night club in London. We have been married for 27 years and realised our dream (mainly mine at first! ) by settling on the Paradise Island of Mauritius in 2003.
After much searching we found the perfect spot to build our home. Recently Maryline has opened a Tourist Boutique gift shop, which specialises in the sale of essential oils, particularly Ylang Ylang essential oil.
We are ardent ecologists, and we always encourage visitors to visit our Island and discover a greener side of Mauritius, which sadly is overlooked by the majority of tour operators promoting Mauritius as a holiday destination.
We process a good knowledge of Mauritius, which grows day by day, and through our experience, hopefully we can pass on a few tips and "what to do's and not to do's" to visitors and those of you who may be contemplating a similar move.

This is a picture with some of the birds that visit our garden every day.
We are very lucky in living in a beautiful unspoiled setting at the foot of "Lion Mountain"
The local country side is a conservation area, maintained by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. The threatened species the Mauritian Kestrel and the Pink Pigeon, nest locally. Many a day a kestrel visits the garden.

.My best mate DJ

Here's DJ (no he doesn't smoke lol.)
DJ is a rescue dog,we adopted him when we settled on the Island. There are many stray and homeless dogs on the Island, and it's a problem currently being tackled by PAWS (this is a story for another post).
We have always kept dogs as part of the family, we have owned Rottweilers which have sadly passed on. At present we are the proud parents of DJ and JD a newly adopted abandoned puppy, and 2 griffons Zoe and Saxo. Included in this family are 2 cats Tiggy and Timmy, but as is the nature of cats they actually own us.

Every journey starts with a small step.......
Maryline & Paul Maryline & Paul

,Why am I doing this I ask myself ? Well this is a new site (not my first) but specifically built because having a blog gets you noticed by Google right? who knows but as it seems to be the buzz word in SEO circles, what's to lose?

Actually that's not the reason (though it could be a bonus) I just felt I wanted to make a record of my life in Mauritius -If it gets read great and if it is of interest to any would be expats out there, then I might be able to give you a personal insight into the joys and sometimes frustration of living in this "Paradise Island" which has been Maryline's and my home now for 12 years.

We are living the dream, yes and no. After several years we have adopted an alternative lifestyle and it suits us both.

So this is going to be a regular up-date on most things that are happening in our lives - I hope you find something of interest to read.

I'll close this first post for now and will get stuck in with various articles, as and when I'm in the mood.

Best regards Paul
